A national conversation to Reboot STEMM

Have you imagined a STEMM sector where our careers are rewarded based on inclusive, fairer and more equitable outcomes?

WiSPP Executive Member Emma Burrows has, and in 2020 she was awarded a Theo Murphy Think Tank Initiative grant from the  Australian Academy of Science to start a conversation with Early Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRS) to explore this question.

Together with an organising committee with representatives of the Australian STEMM community, Emma has designed Reboot STEMM. This initiative aims to develop a strategy for a more inclusive and diverse way of defining, recognising and rewarding “success” in academic careers

The group have set out to create a process that can engage Australia-wide. Rather than hosting a face-to-face event under the amazing dome of the Academy in Canberra, they are running a dynamic online process that will enable a more diverse group of people to attend, more accurately reflecting the diversity of STEMM in Australia.

This initiative contributes to a global movement and the group has connected with leaders in shifting STEMM systems such as DORA and the Recognition and Rewards Programme in the Netherlands.

WiSPP, in our Task Force Initiative, identified “Redefining Measures of Success” as a key area critical in delivering equity and inclusion outcomes. We are proudly supporting Emma and her team to deliver this this initiative.
